In a recent interview, Chirag Paswan, the newly appointed Union Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, shared candid reflections on his brief Bollywood career. Paswan, who is now a prominent political figure, revealed that the only positive takeaway from his stint in the film industry was his enduring friendship with actress Kangana Ranaut.

A Short-Lived Bollywood Career

Chirag Paswan’s journey into Bollywood began and ended with the 2011 romantic comedy Miley Naa Miley Hum. The film, which starred Paswan as an aspiring tennis player and Kangana Ranaut as his love interest, also featured a notable supporting cast, including Kabir Bedi, Poonam Dhillon, and Neeru Bajwa. Despite the promising lineup, the movie failed to make a mark at the box office.

Reflecting on his Bollywood experience, Paswan admitted, “It was a different time. I can’t say if it was difficult or easy. No one from my family has ever been to Bollywood. In a filmy way I can say, ‘Meri saat pushto ka film se koi naata nahi raha’” .

He acknowledged that acting was not his forte, stating, “Even before the country, I realized I was a disaster. I just came to know that I wasn’t made for this (acting)”.

The Struggles of an Unfamiliar Terrain

Paswan’s foray into Bollywood was a pioneering effort, as he came from a family with no prior ties to the film industry. He found it challenging to adapt to the scripted nature of acting, especially since he was used to his father’s impromptu style of public speaking. “I have seen my father giving speeches, standing on the stage and talking impromptu and here they are giving me dialogues that’s written and I just have to say so much,” he explained.

His struggles with memorizing dialogues and dealing with the heavy makeup required for his role further cemented his realization that acting was not his calling. This realization led him to pivot towards a career in politics, where he has since found significant success.

A Blossoming Friendship

Despite the setbacks in his acting career, Paswan cherishes the friendship he developed with Kangana Ranaut during the filming of Miley Naa Miley Hum. “The only good thing that happened to me after trying my luck in acting is that Kangana and I became really good friends,” he shared. This friendship has endured over the years, even as both have transitioned into political careers.

Paswan expressed his eagerness to reconnect with Ranaut in Parliament, noting that their busy lives had caused them to lose touch. “I was really looking forward to meeting Kangana in the parliament because the past three years, I was so busy in my own life that I had lost my connection with her”.

From Bollywood to Politics

Chirag Paswan’s political journey began in earnest after his brief stint in Bollywood. Born into a prominent political family, he is the son of the late Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan. Following the underwhelming reception of his film debut, Paswan stepped into the political arena in 2014, taking over the leadership of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP).

His political career has been marked by a steady rise, and he has emerged as one of the most influential youth leaders in Bihar. In the recent general elections, Paswan won the Hajipur Lok Sabha seat, a constituency his father once represented. His party, part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), secured all five seats in the state for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Reflecting on his career choices, Paswan has always been clear about his political aspirations. In a 2014 interview, he said, “Acting was something that I wanted to do but I was very clear that eventually it would be politics. It was always my final destination. You may call it dynastic or whatever but the fact is politics is what I know best”.

Kangana Ranaut’s Political Journey

Kangana Ranaut, Paswan’s co-star from Miley Naa Miley Hum, has also made a significant transition from Bollywood to politics. Known for her outspoken nature and fearless attitude, Ranaut joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and contested for the Mandi constituency in Himachal Pradesh. Her decision to enter politics marked a complete departure from her active Bollywood career.

Ranaut’s political journey has been characterized by her bold statements and unwavering commitment to her beliefs. She has often been in the spotlight for her controversial remarks, but her straightforward approach has garnered both admiration and criticism. Paswan, when asked about advising Ranaut on her political journey, remarked that she doesn’t require any guidance. He noted that her strength lies in her ability to speak her mind, even if it’s not always seen as politically correct.

A New Chapter in Their Lives

As both Paswan and Ranaut continue to make their mark in Indian politics, their shared history in Bollywood adds an interesting layer to their narratives. Their friendship, forged during their brief time together in the film industry, remains a cherished aspect of their lives.

Paswan’s reflections on his Bollywood days and his friendship with Ranaut offer a glimpse into the personal side of these two public figures. While their careers have taken them in different directions, the bond they share continues to be a source of mutual respect and support.
